In a few percentages of the patients the following complications may occur:
ImplantologyA new quality of life Sooner or later all of us have to realize: we can loose some of our teeth. It may have many reasons. Most of teeth might be lost due to caries or parodontosis (receding gums). In many cases teeth will be lost in accidents. However lost teeth - small or big it is the same - must be replaced as soon as possible. Dental prosthesis is needed. What shall we do? Bridge? Set of false teeth? Or implantation? Partial or entire prosthesis do disturb a lot of patients. If a set of false teeth is not properly fixed to the jaw very often unpleasant side effects may occur: masticatory functions will be limited, it will be difficult to articulate well, a strong sneeze might have embarrassing consequences. To replace lost tooth or teeth neighbouring teeth had to be drawn into the procedure so far. They had to be scraped - even if they were healthy! However there is another solution. Up-to-date dental sciences do offer you a new option of dental prosthesis: A safely fixed implantation! On the next pages we'll inform you about implantations in details so that you would be able to discuss this modern dental therapy as an alternative way of dental prosthesis with your dentist.
In case of teeth diseases or deficiencies prosthetic treatment's target is from the beginning to reconstruct natural conditions as precisely as possible. The less teeth we have the harder is to hit this target. Often, especially in case of larger prosthesis it is impossible to ensure perfect function for longer time, because condition of jaw and mycoderm may change depending on situation. Set of false teeth will not fit in properly anymore; resistance will be lost. In many of such cases implantations offer a better solution. Implantations replace missing teeth, including their roots. They will be put (implanted) in place of previous teeth, in the jaw. During healing time implantation will be overgrown with bone so that the implantation will be securely fixed in the bone. During healing time, taking at least three months, implantations are placed under the mycoderm (gums) that protects them from burden. Afterwards head (superstructure) will be screwed in the implantation, and "new" tooth will be fixed on that like traditional crowns in other cases. Instead of tooth root implantation takes over masticatory burden and forwards it to the jaw. In order to get artificial tooth root securely fixed in jaw implantations meet three important requirements:
It depends on certain indication given by your dentist. We will demonstrate with some examples in which cases can be implantations used as alternative to traditional prosthesis: ![]() If a tooth has to be replaced Use of implantation makes replacing of missing tooth possible without scraping neighbouring healthy teeth for making a bridge. If one or more teeth are missing at the end of either lower or upper jaw In case of traditional prosthetic dentistry only the use of removable prosthesis put on the mycoderm would be possible. Using implantation in such case the basis of a fixed bridge can be built up. ![]() If there is a big hiatus between existing teeth. In case of such hiatus implantations will be built in serving as prosthesis' pillars together with existing teeth. Depending on the individual case fixed or removable prosthesis might be made. ![]() If there is no own tooth anymore. Traditional prosthesis lays on the mycoderm. In case of implantations set of false teeth will be fixed so that it doesn't disturb chewing or speech. ![]() A new quality of life Advantage of implantations is obvious: your teeth are securely fixed, you will see, your "new teeth" will help you to get back self-confidence. Whereas we cannot give up prosthetic dentistry absolutely using implantations, size of prosthesis might be reduced considerably and they can be better adjusted to the natural starting point. Either you or an outsider will hardly realize it being more favourable both from functional and esthetical points of view. You may wear your "new teeth" like natural ones. More stable fixing of prosthesis allows you to chew stronger and be able to eat everything hereby. It doesn't disturb you during speech and you may laugh with all your heart. How does the treatment going on? First of all your dentist will examine you thoroughly. Eventual inflammations must be cured before it comes to the implantation. Carious teeth and parodonthosis must be treated. In case of general illness you may have to contact your family doctor. ![]() When your dentist made an overall picture about your bite, informed you about the treatment, planned everything the intervention might start. After local anaesthesia - if required the treatment can be carried out in narcosis, in some cases (e.g. if 6 implantations are placed in at the same time) it is even expressly suggested - the jaw will be opened in that place where the implantation will be built in the bone. An implantation-bed will be prepared, implantation will be put in and the mycoderm will be stitched afterwards. In most cases implantation's after-effect might be an unpleasant feeling for 2-3 days. During this time swelling and eventual slight pain may occur on the operative field, but these can be stopped entirely with medicines. Post-operative regular soft laser treatment may accelerate recovery, reduce possibility of eventual complications. ![]() Implantation will be protected of undesirable burden during healing period by covering it with mycoderm, so it can heal undisturbedly. Depending on individual case implantation will be built in the bone perfectly within 3-6 months. Superstructure will be screwed in implantation afterwards and prosthesis will be fixed on that. ![]() Can anybody receive an implantation? Of course, in certain cases an implantation is not possible. For example:
Thorough dental and oral care has special importance in order to keep implantation's long lifetime in the same manner as in case of natural teeth. Not satisfactory dental and oral care sooner or later may result in loss of implantation. Therefore if patient's dental care is not satisfactory dentist cannot suggest implantation. Of course we give you only some examples that don't have to come true during treatment. You are kindly asked to contact our surgery, and ask your dentist about the possibility of using implantation in your particular case. You will be informed about possible risks, too. For how long will implantations last? Implantations meet technical requirements necessary to durable dental prosthesis. For how long you can wear it with pleasure, is first of all up to you! Surely with thorough oral hygiene you can prevent inflammations threatening implantations. Many patients wear their implantations for many years without any complaints. If you are able to take your dentist's strict advice regarding oral hygiene you will enjoy your fixed prosthesis very much. Finally the most important thing: your dental and oral hygiene! We have pointed it out several times already. Care of your prosthesis by prescription is included in that. Please ask you dentist, the best way to take care of your teeth, who will explain you what are the best products for you from dentists' point of view. You will find many good products in the shops: from toothpaste to tooth brush of optimal form through dental floss. Please respect your dentist's suggestions:
![]() General anaesthesiaMany of you are scared of the dental chair, the dental engine's sound, the eventual inconveniences of the treatment. This is the reason for making it possible in our clinic to undergo certain dental interventions in general anaesthesia, i.e. narcosis. If you would like to choose this opportunity, please read our brief notice below. The general anaesthesia occurs in the form of "ambulant anaesthesia". This means the following: Healthy patients under 40 need only a laboratory analysis, the necessary referral can be given by our dentists. Patients above 40 will be checked up before narcosis by our anaesthesiologist. The results of certain preliminary checks are needed: results of a complete laboratory analysis (blood count, blood sugar, liver- and kidney function, ions, prothrombin), EKG, and chest X-ray (not older than 6 month). You are kindly asked to arrive to our clinic 1 hour before the agreed time of the narcosis. We reduce the stress with a tranquillizer, the anaesthesiologist can examine you and you can put your eventual questions. We suggest you to bring comfortable clothes to change. Please avoid tight clothing! It is important to know that narcosis and dental intervention shouldn't take more than 1.5 - 2 hours. If longer time is needed, it is preferable to carry out the treatment in more steps. Narcosis however makes it possible to carry out treatments taking long weeks otherwise at one go and totally unperceived. As a first step we secure a vein by a plastic cannula to be able to introduce the narcotics and painkillers. All things considered this small prick is the most painful part of the entire intervention. As soon as you fall asleep a sterile breather-pipe would be introduced into your trachea. This is necessary because after falling asleep swallowing reflexes are abolished and the stomach's content could get easily in the lung. To be absolutely on the safe side you are kindly asked not to eat and drink anything 6 hours before narcosis! A mixture of oxygen and dinitrogenoxid will be introduced into your lung through the breather-pipe to prevent the wrong swallowing of saliva, filling material or a piece of teeth. Of course this pipe will be removed before you wake up. After anaesthesia you can stay approximately 3 hours in a comfortable bed in our surgery and recover. If no complications arise you are allowed to go home with an attendant. It is prohibited to drive a car on the day of the narcosis! As every medical intervention anaesthesia also has its risks: such as super sensitiveness against the medicines used or the swallowing of stomach's content. But the verified methods used by us, modern medicine, the anaesthesia apparatus, the monitoring of your organism's function - all serve your feeling of safety. The dental provision in anaesthesia makes dentists' work comfortable, precise, but quick at the same time, and our patients don't have to undergo awake these intimate interventions carried out on a sensitive area. On the other hand we do not suggest making those interventions in narcosis that are completely painless and the co-operation of the patient is appreciated (e.g. mush-bite after placing of fillings or prosthesis). Do hope we could satisfy your curiosity regarding dentistry in anaesthesia. Dr. Zsolt Murvai
